Specialties Gourmet is committed to service and community. We seek out and support community related activities that have a focus on good health and personal well being. We believe it is our responsibility to lend our knowledge of healthful eating and meal preparation to organizations that desire our expertise. We want to do our part to ensure everyone has the tools they need to lead a better life through healthful eating.
During the first quarter Specialties Gourmet was invited to participate in the Healthy Jefferson, Healthy Hearts program sponsored by the Jefferson County Health Department and the Big Bend Rural Health Network in partnership with the local community. Chef Matrell Hawkins conducted a Heart Healthy Cooking Demonstration for the program. The aim of the program is to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease in the African American community in Jefferson County through education, nutrition, and physical activity.

"Teaching this class was a great experience for me. It did my heart good to share my knowledge with all of the people who came out in support of good health," said Chef Matrell. "The class participants were very open minded and genuinely enjoyed the modified versions of their favorite foods.
Thank you Jefferson County for giving Specialties Gourmet the opportunity to make a difference."
Program Activities Included: Heart Healthy Cooking Demonstration, Fitness Demonstrations, Kids Corner, Live Entertainment, and Informational Tables from Educational Partners.
